The Samsung N140 First Look

Continuing their mission to confuse the hell out of the general public, Samsung released the N140 recently. What’s confusing about that? Well… it’s pretty much the same as the NC10 – a netbook they released dead on a year ago.
So what’s going on?
Well, a closer look shows 2 small (but perhaps important) details:
Change Number 1. EVEN Longer Battery Life
The immense battery life of the NC10 put Samsung on the netbook map. It seems they’ve decided to focus on this and have pushed this up to a massive 11.5 hours in the N140.
ELEVEN AND A HALF HOURS BATTERY LIFE! Well… as you’re probably aware, if you’re running anything more than ‘notepad’ your actual performance will be slightly less than that. Still, the test model we’ve seen managed around the 10-hour mark.
Change Number 2. Upgraded Wireless
The Samsung N140 comes with 802.11n wireless built in. What’s that mean? It means faster wireless if your router can handle it. It also means (and this is the important bit) better range.
Other Features
In case you’re not familiar with the older NC10 or N110, here are the key specs the N140 has inherited:
- 10.1″ Ultra-bright, ultra-sharp, low-power screen (1024 x 600 resolution)
- 3 USB Ports (very important – means you can have a mouse, keyboard and external device plugged in when at home)
- Built-in Webcam (great for skype)
- ‘Almost full-size’ keyboard (an essential if you’re going to be typing for anywhere near 11 hours!)
- Windows XP Home
- Intel Atom 1.6GHz processor
- 1GB RAM (expandable to 2GB)
- 160GB Hard Drive
- Bluetooth 2.1
- SD/SDHC/MMC Card Slot
- Low Weight: 1.27kg
- Samsung Recovery Package
Overall?
As a proud NC10 owner, this is a good step in the right direction. The extra battery life and enhanced wireless are very nice add-ons. Were I to buy a netbook today I’d definitely be happy putting my money on the N140.
