Samsung’s AMOLED Netbook

It’s fair to say Samsung have been at the forefront of innovation in the netbook market. They’re constantly pushing out new designs, new ideas, and – importantly – new features that genuinely improve what netbooks can do for us.

If the prototypes they’re currently showing off are anything to go by, it looks like they’re about to do it again with AMOLED. (“AMO who?”) …

In case you haven’t seen the term, AMOLED stands for “Active-Matrix Organic Light Emiting Diode” (you can see why they shorten it…)

At the latest FPD International show (‘flat panel display’), Samsung showcased their new AMOLED netbook prototype.

What’s So Great About AMOLED?

There are 2 fantastic features of AMOLED displays:

  1. They have extremely low power consumption, meaning your battery life lasts even longer.
  2. They feature unbelievable picture quality. It’s hard to grasp quite how good the quality is without seeing one of these screens in real life.

The startling picture quality is caused by the immensely high contrast ratio of these screens. Contrast ratio is a measure of the ‘brightness’ and ‘darkness’ of a screen – ie, how black are the blacks & how bright are the colours.

Go to the cinema and a good quality showing might feature a 500:1 contrast ratio. Meanwhile… these screens Samsung have been showing off have a massive 100,000:1 contrast ration (a hundred thousand to one in case you’re finding that hard to read – we did!)

When Are These Being Released?

There’s no launch date on these yet, but, if they follow the usual prototype-release timeline, we should start seeing them hit the shops in the first half of 2010, if not the first quarter. We’ll be sure to keep a close eye on these!
