Today the BBC has an article on their news website which reports netbook popularity is on the slide and that they will become redundant within a couple of years. Read on for our thoughts on the subject.

Another Viewsonic Netbook?
Yep, that’s right, Viewsonic – the famous monitor makers – have launched a Windows 7 netbook, the VNB102.
Earlier in the year they launched the VNB100 which more-or-less flopped. So why are Viewsonic pursuing this?
Well, it isn’t really surprising: Everyone else is doing it! (see our article on the ridiculous ‘Dual Screen Netbook’ for proof).

Kindle for your Netbook?
Amazon’s Kindle is one of the best selling products of the last 18 months. It’s a stand-alone ebook reader that you can take anywhere. Thousands of books in your bag, in a really convenient little package.

Ultra-Thin Seagate Drives
Seagate leaked this week that they’re planning to launch a new range of ‘ultra-thin’ drives at January’s Consumer Electronics Show.
The idea – presumably – is to try and corner a new niche in the higher end of the netbook market. Here are some quick specs on the drive:

Google Chrome for Netbooks
Google have been throwing their weight around a bit this week talking about "Netbooks". Among other things, their VP of Product Management (Sundar Pichai) has been speaking about how netbooks will work together with Chrome (Google’s browser) & Chrome OS (their operating system).

Lenovo Smartbook
Remember when netbooks were tiny? When ASUS brought out their first, tiny EEE PCs? Well picking up where those little netbooks left off, Lenovo have announced their first ‘Smartbook’ based on the Snapdragon chipset.
Samsung AMOLED Viewing Angle & Release Date
As an update on the forthcoming Samsung AMOLED netbooks, here’s a video of one seen in the flesh at the Flat Panel Display International show.
The brightness of the screen itself is ridiculous (probably good enough to use on a beach, on the brightest day of the year, with a nuclear mushroom as a backdrop, through a pair of brightness enhancing glasses. Ok – maybe not that good, but at least better than anything we’ve ever seen before).
But alongside that, the viewing angle of the machine is simply fantastic. It seems you can look at it from almost a 90 degree angle with no loss of image.
